چکیده

We analyze a mathematical model of a simple trophic web with two herbivores and one predator. The studied scenarios represent a common practice in the steppes of Argentine Patagonia, where livestock are raised in a semi-wild state, either on the open range or enclosed, coexisting with competitors and predators. We perform numerical simulations of metapopulations assemblages of the system, which allow to incorporate the effects of habitat heterogeneity and destruction. We find that the model provides a good theoretical framework in several situations, including the control of the wild populations that the ranchers exert to different extent.

Clarifying competition: the case of wildlife and pastoral livestock in East Africa

Contentious debates surrounding the relationship between peoples’ livelihoods and protected areas in East Africa have largely revolved around claims and counter-claims about the level of competition between pastoral livestock and wildlife. Habitat and dietary overlap are often cited as the primary mechanism by which competition occurs with both overlap and lack of overlap (displacement) used as...

Competition, a Major Factor Structuring Seaweed Communities

Competition for shared resources has long been viewed as an important structuring agent in natural communities (Gause 1934; Strong 1980). Generally defined as the simultaneous use of limited resources by two or more organisms, competition can negatively impact population growth rates and influence community-level processes such as predation and/or how species respond to disturbances (Roughgarde...
